Melissa Alexander’s journey to becoming a candidate for Hudson County Register is one of heart, perseverance and a deep-rooted commitment to her community. Born and raised in Hudson County, Melissa has spent her life working to make the county a better place for families, neighbors and future generations.
Melissa’s story begins in the very heart of Hudson County. Growing up in a close-knit community, she witnessed firsthand the challenges that many families face—struggling with limited resources, navigating bureaucratic hurdles and finding stability in an ever-changing world. From a young age, Melissa understood the importance of community support and the role that public services play in people’s lives. Her family instilled in her the values of hard work, empathy and a desire to give back.
As a child, Melissa was always curious, asking questions about how things worked and how problems could be solved. Whether helping her neighbors with everyday tasks or volunteering at local events, she found fulfillment in being of service to others. Her natural leadership skills began to shine through even at a young age, as she took on roles that allowed her to support her peers and improve the lives of those around her.
Although Melissa pursued education in her early years, she soon realized that traditional schooling didn’t offer the practical, real-world education she was craving. College, while a goal she initially pursued, didn’t feel like the right fit for her. Instead of following a conventional academic path, Melissa chose to embark on her own journey of learning through hands-on experience in the community.
This decision to step away from the classroom didn’t diminish her drive for personal growth; instead, it set her on a course that would have a profound impact on Hudson County. As Melissa often says, “College isn’t for everyone and it didn’t stop me from serving Hudson families for decades. I learned more leading with heart than any textbook could teach.”
Her choice to prioritize real-world experience over classroom theory led Melissa to become a notary and social services aide, where she could directly interact with families and help them navigate critical moments in their lives. In these roles, she learned valuable lessons about resilience, compassion and the importance of practical solutions.
For over 13 years, Melissa worked as a notary public, notarizing vital documents like wills, powers of attorney and trusts. In this capacity, she came to understand the intricacies of legal documentation and the impact it has on families—whether in times of crisis, planning for the future or securing financial stability. Her work as a notary allowed her to build lasting relationships with residents and develop a deep knowledge of the needs of Hudson County families.
In addition to her work as a notary, Melissa also serves as a social services aide within the Welfare system, helping families access critical benefits and resources. She works tirelessly to guide people from hopelessness to stability, offering support in securing food assistance, healthcare and housing. In this role, she became known for her dedication to going above and beyond to ensure that families received the support they needed.
Throughout these years, Melissa became a trusted figure in the community—a person who not only understood the struggles of Hudson County residents but actively works to improve their quality of life. Her efforts were not limited to paperwork or office hours. She brought people together, enlisted local partners and led initiatives that created tangible improvements in the community.
Melissa’s community impact didn’t stop with her direct service. She took it upon herself to spearhead projects that would address everyday challenges and create long-term positive change for Hudson County. For instance, she worked with local bus companies to install bus stop benches, providing safer, more comfortable spaces for people to wait. She also collaborated with utility companies to improve lighting along the path to Caven Point, ensuring that people could walk through the area safely at night. Additionally, her work in restoring a deserted community park into a vibrant family hub through a City Council-approved proposal is a testament to her commitment to transforming spaces for the betterment of the community.
These community wins—whether improving infrastructure or creating public spaces—are a reflection of Melissa’s leadership style. She doesn’t just identify problems; she works with local partners to create actionable solutions that benefit everyone.
In 2021, Melissa decided to run for Hudson County Register. She recognized that the office needed a fresh approach—one that prioritized service, accessibility and efficiency. Her decision to run was not motivated by political ambition but by a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of Hudson County residents. She wanted to modernize the Register’s office and ensure that every person who walked through its doors felt valued and respected.
Although her 2021 campaign didn’t result in victory, it was far from a loss. Melissa gained invaluable insights into the needs of voters and the operations of the office. She connected with residents, listened to their concerns and refined her vision for how the Register could serve them better. This experience fueled her determination to run again in 2026, stronger and more committed than ever to bringing change to Hudson County.
Now, as she runs for Hudson County Register again in 2026, Melissa is driven by the same principles that have guided her throughout her life: putting people first, embracing transparency and leading with compassion. She is committed to modernizing the Register’s office with digital upgrades, ensuring that services are accessible for everyone.
Above all, Melissa’s leadership is grounded in her belief that government should be about service, not bureaucracy. She wants to create an office where residents feel heard, valued and supported—a place where the needs of the people always come first.
Melissa’s journey from a young girl in Hudson County to a trusted community leader is a testament to her dedication, resilience and unwavering commitment to public service. She has spent her life working for the betterment of those around her and she’s not stopping now. As Hudson County Register, Melissa will continue to fight for a more accessible, efficient and people-centered government—one that reflects the values of the community she knows and loves.
